Everything you need to know to travel smarter, safer and happier.
Apply for visas at least 3 months in advance for popular destinations. Processing times vary and embassies can be slow during peak seasons.
Bank statements (3–6 months), hotel bookings, return flights, passport photos, travel insurance, employer letter and itinerary. Have everything ready before applying.
Most embassies want to see $50–100 per day of your trip in your bank account. Some require specific minimums — check each country's requirements.
Always apply through official government portals or embassies. Third-party visa agencies charge extra fees and can create complications.
You will use 20% of what you pack 80% of the time. A carry-on only policy saves time, money (no checked bag fees) and energy.
Rolling clothes instead of folding saves up to 30% more space and reduces wrinkles. Packing cubes are a game-changer for organization.
Limit yourself to 3 pairs maximum: comfortable walking shoes, sandals/flip flops, and one smart pair. Wear the bulkiest pair on travel days.
Pack ibuprofen, antihistamine, rehydration sachets, diarrhea medication, antiseptic wipes and any prescription medications with extra supply.
Book flights on Tuesday/Wednesday mornings. Use Google Flights "Explore" map to find cheapest destinations. Set price alerts for routes you want. Be flexible on dates by ±3 days.
Book directly with hotels (often cheaper than OTAs), negotiate for longer stays, use loyalty programs, and consider hostels even if you want privacy (many have private rooms).
Avoid restaurants directly on tourist squares — walk 2 streets back and prices halve. Lunch is always cheaper than dinner for the same dish at sit-down restaurants.
Night buses and trains save accommodation costs. Local buses are 10x cheaper than tourist shuttles. Trains offer scenery that flights miss entirely.
Use a VPN on public WiFi. Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts. Keep digital copies of all documents in a secure cloud folder accessible offline.
Use hotel safes for passports and extra cash. Keep a separate "mugger's wallet" with $20 and expired cards. Carry bags in front in crowded areas.
Non-negotiable. Ensure coverage includes: medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, lost luggage and adventure activities if applicable. World Nomads is excellent for backpackers.
Research emergency numbers for each country before arrival. Register with your country's embassy online. Share your itinerary with someone at home who can act if needed.
