Why Paris Captivates the World

Paris needs no introduction. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Seine — these are images burned into the global imagination. But Paris rewards those who wander beyond the landmarks. It's a city of hidden courtyards, neighbourhood bistros, art in every arrondissement, and a quality of daily life that few cities can match. The French take bread, coffee, cheese and living seriously — and that seriousness produces something extraordinary.

Top 10 Attractions in Paris

1

Eiffel Tower

Gustave Eiffel's 1889 iron masterpiece stands 330 metres tall and remains the world's most visited paid monument. Book tickets online weeks in advance. The 2nd floor offers the best views — the summit is spectacular but crowded. Go at dusk when it sparkles with 20,000 lights.

2

The Louvre Museum

The world's largest art museum houses 38,000 works across 650,000 sq ft. The Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace are must-sees. Book timed entry tickets online. Arrive at opening to beat the crowds to the Mona Lisa.

3

Notre-Dame Cathedral

The Gothic masterpiece dating to 1163 is undergoing restoration after the 2019 fire and partially reopened in December 2024. The exterior and surrounding Île de la Cité remain beautiful to explore.

4

Champs-Élysées & Arc de Triomphe

Paris's grandest boulevard stretches 1.9km from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe. Climb the Arc (284 steps, free for under-25s) for a spectacular view of 12 avenues radiating outward in a perfect star.

5

Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur

The bohemian hilltop village where Picasso and Modigliani once lived. The white-domed Sacré-Cœur Basilica offers panoramic city views. Explore the winding streets, artist studios of Place du Tertre, and the city's only vineyard.

6

Palace of Versailles

Louis XIV's extraordinary baroque palace 23km from Paris is a half-day trip. The Hall of Mirrors, royal apartments and vast gardens (14km of paths) are breathtaking. Take the RER C train from central Paris.

7

Seine River Cruise

A Bateaux Mouches cruise is the most romantic way to see Paris. The 1-hour journey passes 18 major monuments. Evening cruises with dinner are a memorable splurge. Bateaux Parisiens and Vedettes du Pont Neuf also run excellent tours.

8

Musée d'Orsay

Housed in a stunning Beaux-Arts railway station, the Orsay holds the world's greatest collection of Impressionist masterpieces — Monet's Water Lilies, Van Gogh's self-portraits, Renoir, Degas and Cézanne. Book ahead and go on Thursday evenings when it's open late.

9

Le Marais District

Paris's trendiest neighbourhood blends medieval architecture with cutting-edge galleries, concept stores and excellent falafel (Rue des Rosiers). Centre Pompidou for modern art, Place des Vosges for Paris's oldest square, and Merci concept store are highlights.

10

Sainte-Chapelle

Often overlooked, Sainte-Chapelle is arguably Paris's most beautiful building. Its 15 towering stained-glass windows (15 metres tall) create an almost supernatural light show. Built in 1248 and hidden within the Palais de Justice complex.

Food & Dining in Paris

Paris is a world capital of gastronomy. A classic Parisian day: start with a café crème and croissant at a zinc-topped bar (standing is cheaper and more authentic), lunch on a croque-monsieur or steak-frites at a neighbourhood brasserie, afternoon snack of a jambon-beurre baguette, and dinner at a bistro with wine for €30–50 per person.

Must-eat in Paris: Croissant (try Du Pain et des Idées in the 10th), Steak tartare, Soupe à l'oignon, Crème brûlée, Escargot (if adventurous), and macarons from Ladurée or Pierre Hermé.

✈️ Getting There

Two major airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG, 25km north) and Orly (ORY, 14km south). RER B train from CDG to central Paris takes 35 min (€11.80). Eurostar from London St Pancras takes 2.5 hours direct.

🚇 Getting Around

The Paris Métro (16 lines) covers the entire city. Buy a carnet (10-ticket booklet) or get a Navigo Easy card. A single ticket costs €2.15. Vélib' bikes are excellent for short trips between attractions.

🛂 Visa Info

EU citizens: no passport needed. USA, UK, Canada, Australia: 90-day visa-free (Schengen). Pakistan and most South Asian countries require a Schengen visa. Apply at the French Embassy 3 months ahead. €80 fee.

Best Time to Visit Paris

Spring (April–June): Paris at its most beautiful — mild weather, flowers blooming, long evenings. Peak tourist season — book ahead. June has the longest days and liveliest outdoor dining scene.

Autumn (September–November): Crowds thin, prices drop, and golden light transforms the boulevards. September is arguably the best month — warm, less crowded and Parisians have returned from August holidays.

Avoid August: Half of Paris goes on holiday, many restaurants and shops close. Very hot, very touristy.
